Family Day Activities Near Brookfields Communities

Family Day is coming up in just two weeks’ time – on Monday, February 19th. This year marks ten years since Family Day was first introduced in Ontario, back in 2008. It’s a relatively new holiday, and so your family may or may not have already established a tradition. Whether you plan to spend the day with family or friends, here are a few ideas to help you make the most of the day and fully enjoy your long weekend!

We’ve compiled some fun activities and local events near the locations of our current new home communities:

Alliston

Located in the Town of New Tecumseth, Alliston is home to our Treetops community. Use the long weekend to take advantage of Treetops’ amazing community features. The 45 acres of preservation area are the perfect grounds to go for a hike in the snow, or visit the 7-acre community park to enjoy the lookout area and toboggan hill.

Looking for something extra special to do? Drive up to Wasaga Beach (a 40-minute drive) for Snowman Mania, a weekend-long event full of fun activities. Check out the charity ball hockey tournament, a craft beer sampling festival, live entertainment, a chili cook-off, the polar plunge, and more! There’s something to do for the whole family.

You could also head out for a day on the slopes at nearby Mansfield Ski Club (members only) or Snow Valley Ski Resort. If you’re not a skier or snowboarder, Snow Valley has many attractions off the slopes, too – like snowshoeing and Ontario’s best snow tubing.

Aurora

Home of our Woodhaven community, Aurora is known for its many beautiful parks and conservation areas, nestled in and around its urban core. Get outside and explore one of them on foot, snow shoes, or cross-country skis.

There’s also an exciting special event on Family Day, hosted by the Town of Aurora: Arctic Adventure! The event takes place from 10am to 4pm at Aurora Town Park (Mosley and Wells Street), and includes an array of free family events: skating, mini snow tubing, mini ice fishing, arctic golf, body zorbs, inflatables, live bands, professional ice carving, a wildlife show, food vendors, and more! There are also indoor events at Arctic Adventure, including indoor swimming from 11am to 2pm at the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex, a family Zumba class from 11am to 12pm at the Aurora Family Leisure Complex, and an intro to Bhangra dancing from 1pm to 3pm at the Aurora Cultural Centre.

Caledon East

Caledon East is a beautiful location, and our Pathways residents can enjoy the many outdoor recreational opportunities close to home, including hiking along the Trans Canada Trail, exploring the Humber River Heritage Park, and adventuring through the Glen Haffy Conservation Area. Any of these natural areas would be a relaxing and enjoyable place to spend some time on the Family Day long weekend.

The Wassailing Festival also takes place on Family Day from 11am to 4pm at the Spirit Tree Estate Cidery, less than 20 minutes west of Pathways. (Never heard of wassailing? Read all about it here!) This all-ages event includes fun for the whole family, with outdoor activities (skating and sledding), wagon rides to the pond and toboggan hill, a procession and a chance to make your own noisemaker, face painting, a bonfire for roasting marshmallows, and the Orange Peel Morris Dancers – who will be performing live in order to promote a good apple crop in the season to come! This is a fun event that’s definitely worth checking out.

Paris

Our Pinehurst community is located in Paris, and there are many fun recreational opportunities here, too. Hiking on one of the many hiking trails surrounding Pinehurst is a great way to spend Family Day. You could also explore the Pinehurst Lake Conservation Area (ski and snowshoe equipment is available to rent on weekends and Family Day!) or the Brant Conservation Area (a little bit further away).

For a Family Day activity, check out the Brant Sports Complex or the Syl Apps Community Centre. The Brant Sports Complex is hosting a Family Day skate from 10am to 12pm ($1 per person), while the Syl Apps Community Centre has a great drop-in program called Kinderplay on the Turf that will help you to keep the little ones occupied by letting them run on the turf with a bunch of toys!

Pickering

Our latest community, New Seaton, is located in North Pickering, close to several parks and ravines. As always, we love the idea of spending the long weekend enjoying the outdoors and all that our beautiful surroundings have to offer!

For some indoor Family Day fun, head to the Pickering Recreation Complex from 10am to 4pm for a special event that boasts a full day of interactive family fun. Activities include art, crafts, sports (badminton, ping pong, squash, racquetball, handball, and tennis), dance, fitness classes (including yoga, Zumba and bootcamp), mini putt, balloon twisting and balloon archery, skating, swimming, kindergym, and breakdancing. There’s truly something for every member of the family, and you’re all guaranteed to have a great time trying new activities, competing, and cheering each other on. The cost for this event is $15.75 + HST per family and pre-registration for the events is recommended. Check out the full Family Day schedule here.
